Call for GSR Applications: 2027 Thinking Gender Conference Coordinator

The Center for the Study of Women|Barbra Streisand Center (CSW|Streisand Center) is accepting applications for a Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) position from November 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027. The position is up to 25% for fall quarter and 50% for winter and spring quarters. The GSR’s main responsibility will be to contribute to the 37th annual Thinking Gender Conference (TG27) but may be assigned other research-related duties depending on the needs of the center. The theme for TG27 is “Power and Care in Gendered Migrations.” The conference will take place in person at the UCLA campus on April 29–30, 2027.

This year’s conference theme explores how immigrant communities are experiencing the fast-paced changes and highly visible implementation of immigration policies in gendered ways. From direct impacts like detention and deportation to practices of care for families and communities living in fear, the conference considers how the state produces gendered precarity and insecurity for immigrant communities. It simultaneously considers the role and practices of engaged researchers who accompany immigrants during tumultuous political moments. The selected applicant will have research knowledge within the conference theme as demonstrated by ongoing or completed research projects, conference presentations, and/or publications. They will collaborate with CSW|Streisand Center faculty and staff in further developing the conference programming and provide administrative duties and logistics for the conference.

Eligibility And Compensation

The GSR must be registered as a full-time student (enrolled in a minimum of 12 units) during the academic year and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 throughout the duration of the appointment.

This GSR position will be up to 25% time from November 1, 2026 – December 31, 2026, and up to 50% time from January 1, 2027 – June 30, 2027. Salary point placement is under the provision of Article 32 – Wages of the BR contract. Fee remissions will be included for appointments at 25% time or more. If offered the position, an exception to policy must be approved for students seeking cumulative appointments over 50% time (i.e., accepting a TA position at 50% time with your department and accepting this GSR position at 25% time).

Responsibilities

The position is hybrid and will involve both remote and in-person tasks. Under the supervision of the CSW|Streisand Center Program and Research Developer, the GSR will:

  • Plan and oversee an interdisciplinary conference
    • Develop and implement plans that will aid the conference goal of serving graduate students/ post-doctoral scholars and contributing to feminist research
  • Head the conference selection and program committee
    • Curate conference panels and workshops
    • Review and critique submissions
    • Lead and prepare agendas for conference planning meetings
    • Write and prepare conference documents, including but not limited to correspondence with applicants, publicity materials, manuals, etc.
  • Build and engage with a network of prominent scholars and administrators to create an interdisciplinary program
    • Develop cross-campus fundraising strategies and hone academic development skills
    • Spearhead outreach initiatives
    • Write blogs and outreach material for an academic audience

Qualifications

  • Registered UCLA PhD graduate student in the 2026–2027 academic year
  • Experience organizing or participating in research conferences
  • Demonstrated ability to lead networking, fundraising, and outreach initiatives
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and to collaborate during meetings and discussions
  • Strong organizational skills, including:
    • Demonstrated ability to set and meet deadlines and priorities
    • Demonstrated ability to organize and present information effectively and concisely
    • Demonstrated ability to set and maintain a reliable work schedule
  • Coordinator must be available on campus for all conference dates
  • Research knowledge within the conference theme as demonstrated by ongoing or completed research projects, conference presentations, and/or publications
  • Research interests compatible with CSW|Streisand Center’s core research on women, sexuality, and gender
