Survivors + Allies: “Survivor Care is Healthcare”

March 19-20 the UC Regents will meet at UCLA and members of Survivors + Allies have been selected as Student Advocates to the Regents (StARs) to push for essential survivor support policies. Survivors of sexual violence (SV) face critical gaps in support services, particularly LGBTQIA+ students and other marginalized groups. Their 2021 Survivors + Allies research study of all 10 UCs highlights the urgent need for identity-affirming and accessible mental health and advocacy services.

Survivors + Allies recommends two policies based on their research to enhance survivor support systemwide:

  1. Implement SB 1491: Ensure every UC campus designates an LGBTQIA-focused staff member as a confidential resource for LGBTQIA+ students, in addition to CARE advocates.
  2. Expand Confidential Support Services for Survivors: Guarantee survivors two free therapy sessions with a university counselor, regardless of insurance status.
