Director Position Call for Applications 2025

UCLA Center for the Study of Women|Barbra Streisand Center Director Position Call for Applications 2025

Applications due: Friday, February 7, 2025

The UCLA Center for the Study of Women|Barbra Streisand Center is searching for a new Director to serve a five-year term (2025-2030), which may be extended for a second term. We seek a feminist scholar, broadly defined and in any discipline, whose work advances knowledge about the central role of women, gender, and/or sexuality in societal change, conditions, or relations of power.

The Center and its Mission:

Established in 1984, the Center for the Study of Women (CSW) is an internationally recognized center for research on women, sexuality, and gender. Its Director provides visionary leadership and support for feminist research in diverse arenas across the UCLA campus. The Director also supervises specific activities promoted by CSW, such as organizing lectures and multiple conferences including the annual graduate student research conference, Thinking Gender; and distributing endowed travel funds and dissertation prizes.

In 2021, the Barbra Streisand Center (Streisand Center) was established and made possible by the vision and generosity of artist and activist Barbra Streisand. The Streisand Center, housed at CSW, will become the future Barbra Streisand Institute at UCLA, a forward-thinking institute dedicated to finding solutions to the most vital social issues. Streisand’s transformative gift helps to expand the combined centers’ reach beyond UCLA and Los Angeles, fund faculty and students, and support research and programming that seek to address critical issues facing people of all genders.

CSW became the UCLA Center for the Study of Women|Barbra Streisand Center (CSW|Streisand Center) in 2021. CSW|Streisand Center works towards a world in which education and scholarship are tools for social justice feminism, improving the lives of people of all genders.

Responsibilities of the Director:

The Director provides intellectual and social leadership for all CSW|Streisand Center activities and maintains the important nexus between CSW|Streisand Center, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Studies Program, and the Department of Gender Studies. In addition to supervising the diverse activities undertaken by CSW|Streisand Center, the Director advances the development of CSW|Streisand Center funding from inside and outside sources and furthers the public dissemination of research produced by affiliated scholars. The Director is assisted in these projects by the Associate Director, the equivalent of 4 full-time staff, and 1-2 GSRs.

Qualifications:

We seek a feminist scholar, broadly defined and in any discipline, whose work advances knowledge about the central role of women, gender, and/or sexuality in societal change, conditions, or relations of power. This scholarly and leadership vision should be inclusive and informed by an intersectional approach to analyzing the role of women, gender, and sexuality in society as related to or constituted by other key domains of power such as race, class, or ability. The successful applicant should have a strong and inclusive vision for the Center’s future growth and a record of feminist scholarship recognized internationally. Additional qualifications include administrative and fundraising experience and a personal intellectual agenda that will be enhanced by the directorship experience. Applicants must also show a willingness to stimulate feminist research and creative activities across a wide range of disciplines and an understanding of the challenges facing the university and feminist research in this moment. Because this is an internal search, candidates must already be members of the UCLA Senate and hold the rank of associate or full.

Compensation:

The Director will be appointed to the Center with a 33% appointment, releasing the professor from 33% of their professorial line.  The home school typically uses the salary savings from this release to provide two course releases each year.  In addition, the Director receives one full ninth plus a partial ninth of $8,000, and a research budget of $15,000. CSW|Streisand Center will also provide a 50% graduate student researcher to provide assistance with the research needs of the Center and Director.

Application Procedure and Requirements:

A Search Committee consisting of Hannah Appel, Katherine Marino, Nina Eidsheim, Shannon Speed, and Jasmine Trice is accepting applications and nominations through Friday, February 7, 2025.

To apply, please submit your application here. Finalists will be asked to deliver a 15-20 minute vision presentation in-person and will also be interviewed by CSW|Streisand Center stakeholders.
