Call for Graduate Student Researcher Applications: UC Sentencing Project

A collaboration between the UCLA Center for the Study of Women (CSW) and the California Coalition for Women Prisoners (CCWP), the UC Sentencing Project is conducting the first large-scale study on the specific effects of sentencing and incarceration for women, transgender, and non-binary people caught up in the criminal legal system. Centering the perspectives and insights of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people, the UC Sentencing Project tracks how gender, race, sexuality, socioeconomic status, and region influence the length of sentences.

We are seeking a GSR for summer 2023 with a strong background in IRB application processes and survey development to support the launch of the next phase of our project.

Job Duties

Duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparing applications for submission to UCLA and California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation IRB processes.
  • Organizing and coordinating meetings and focus groups of research team members, consultants, and community advisory board members
  • Supporting the development of survey instruments

Eligibility and Compensation 

A UCLA graduate student (master’s or doctorate) that is either registered in spring quarter 2023 and is a continuing student or has submitted a Statement of Intent to Register for fall quarter 2023.

This is a 25 – 50% time GSRship. GSR step is dependent on degree status and experience.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Experience with preparing IRB applications for full review, especially with vulnerable populations
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team during meetings and discussions
  • Strong organizational skills, including:
    • Demonstrated ability to set and meet deadlines and priorities
    • Ability to organize and present information effectively and concisely

Preferred:

  • Interest in criminal legal reform and prison abolition
  • Experience with community-based research/organizing
  • Experience with survey development
