Announcing CSW’s New Director

Announcing CSW’s New Director

Congratulations Grace Kyungwon Hong!

The Center for the Study of Women is proud to announce its new Director, Grace Kyungwon Hong (Professor, Asian American Studies and Gender Studies). Professor Hong has previously served as the CSW Advisory Committee Chair (2016-2019) and Associate Director (2019-2020). She earned her PhD in Literature at UC San Diego and her MA in Asian American Studies at UCLA. Her research focuses on women of color feminism as an epistemological critique of and alternative to Western liberal humanism and capital, particularly as they manifest as contemporary neoliberalism. CSW is excited to welcome her as Director, and we are confident that she will uphold the center’s mission to create a world where education and scholarship are tools for social justice feminism. Congratulations!

Below is a message sent on behalf of UCLA Division of Social Sciences Dean Darnell Hunt

Dear Colleagues,

I’m delighted to share the news that Professor Grace Hong has agreed to serve a five-year term as Director of the UCLA Center for the Study of Women, beginning July 1, 2020. Grace has been a member of the UCLA faculty for more than a decade, during which time she has been deeply engaged with the work of CSW, serving in a variety of leadership roles.

I’d like to thank the search committee, which was chaired by Professor Sarah Haley, for considering applicants for this important leadership position and for soliciting feedback from CSW stakeholders. The committee aided me greatly in identifying Grace as the ideal colleague to lead CSW into the next phase of its development.

I’m also especially grateful to Professor Rachel Lee for her service as CSW Director over the past five years. CSW has flourished under Rachel’s leadership. Her development of exciting new research streams successfully attracted faculty affiliates from every corner of the campus, modeling the kind of multidisciplinary engagement with cutting-edge topics that we expect of our organized research units. It has been a joy working with Rachel the past three years in my role as Dean, and I look forward to working with Grace in her new role as we endeavor to build on CSW’s many achievements.

Best,

—dhunt
