DESCRIPTION:When: Tuesday\, October 13\n5:00 PM – 7:30 PM\nWhere: James West Alumni Center\, Los Angeles\, CA\n\n​Celebrating Jennifer Weiss-Wolf’s new book\, When in Menopause: A User’s Manual and Citizen’s Guide\, this discussion will bring together policy experts\, UCLA’s leading menopause care provider\, Dr. Rajita Patil\, and groundbreaking reproductive scientist\, Dr. Amander Clark to discuss why menopause care that is high-quality\, inclusive\, and affordable is still so difficult to access; why we still see a chronic inattention to and underinvestment in women’s health and research; and ways we can understand and use the “menopause moment” to reshape the national conversation about equity in women’s health. DESCRIPTION:Join CSW|Streisand Center for a day-long retreat where you can concentrate on your own work alongside like-minded colleagues. \n\n\n\n\nFriday\, October 23 \n10 am – 4 pm Register to access the exact location. \n\nA free opportunity exclusively for UCLA faculty\, lecturers\, and postdocs. \nDo you want to block out a day for writing and contemplation? The Faculty Writing Retreat is your solution. Join us for a day-long retreat where you can concentrate on your own work alongside like-minded colleagues—we will hold the world at bay for you. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. \nThe writing retreat provides a peaceful place to write as well as meals; please bring your computer and any other materials you may need to work. If you have an extension cord\, please bring it\, as power outlets are limited. Also bring some extra clothes for layers\, as the space sometimes tends to be cool. \nWe also offer a parallel virtual retreat with brief introductions and check-ins. \nDuring lunch\, there will be an optional conversation about the writing process. \nIf you register to attend in person and your plans change\, please let us know immediately so that we may offer your spot to the long waitlist. DESCRIPTION:How birth workers\, community organizers\, and local elected officials are mobilizing to address maternal marginalization and seek policy. \n\n\n\n\nMonday\, November 2 \n12-1:30 PM \nRolfe Hall\, Room 2125 \n\nAbout the Talk\nToxic exposures. Emergency evacuations. Endocrine disruption. Miscarriage. Threats to healthy pregnancies and safe births. Guilt\, anxiety\, depression\, and grief. Climate change poses unique challenges to the health\, well-being\, and everyday lives of pregnant people\, mothers\, and those who would like to have children. This talk addresses those challenges – and highlights how birth workers\, community organizers\, and local elected officials are mobilizing to address maternal marginalization and seek policy. \nFeaturing\nJade S. Sasser\, PhD is Professor of Environmental Studies in the Department of Society\, Environment\, and Health Equity at the University of California\, Riverside. She received her PhD in Environmental Science\, Policy\, and Management from the University of California\, Berkeley. Her work explores climate change\, maternal health\, and reproductive justice through an intersectional lens. \nHer first book\, On Infertile Ground: Population Control and Women’s Rights in the Era of Climate Change\, was published in 2018 by NYU Press and won the Emory Elliott Book Award. Her second book\, Climate Anxiety and the Kid Question: Deciding Whether to Have Children in an Uncertain Future (UC Press\, 2024)\, analyzes the relationship between climate emotions\, social inequality\, and reproductive anxiety in the U.S. — Dr. Sasser also hosts a podcast of the same name. Her third book\, in progress\, explores the health impacts of climate change on pregnant people and mothers.
