Director Position Call for Applications 2020

Deadline: Friday, May 1, 2020

The UCLA Center for the Study of Women is searching for a new Director to serve a three-year term (2020-2023), which may be extended for a second term. We seek a feminist scholar, broadly defined and in any discipline, whose work advances knowledge about the central role of women, gender, and/or sexuality in societal change, conditions, or relations of power.

The Center and its Mission:

Established 30 years ago, the Center for the Study of Women (CSW) is an internationally recognized center for research on women, sexuality, and gender. Its Director provides visionary leadership and support for feminist research in diverse arenas across the UCLA campus. The Director also supervises specific activities promoted by CSW, such as organizing lectures and multiple conferences as well as the day-long annual graduate student research conference, Thinking Gender; distributing endowed travel funds and dissertation prizes; and providing a home base for Research Associates or independent scholars from the region.

The UCLA Center for the Study of Women works towards a world in which education and scholarship are tools for social justice feminism, improving the lives of people of all genders.

Responsibilities of the Director:

The Director provides intellectual and social leadership for all CSW activities and maintains the important nexus between the Center for the Study of Women, the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, and Transgender Studies Program (LGBTS), and the Department of Gender Studies. In addition to supervising the diverse activities undertaken by CSW, the Director advances the development of CSW funding from inside and outside sources and furthers the public dissemination of research produced by affiliated scholars. The Director is assisted in these projects by the equivalent of 4 full-time staff and 1-2 GSRs.

Qualifications:

We seek a feminist scholar, broadly defined and in any discipline, whose work advances knowledge about the central role of women, gender, and/or sexuality in societal change, conditions, or relations of power. This scholarly and leadership vision should be inclusive and informed by an intersectional approach to analyzing the role of women, gender, and sexuality in society as related to or constituted by other key domains of power such as race, class, or ability. The successful applicant should have a strong and inclusive vision for the Center’s future growth and a record of feminist scholarship recognized internationally. Additional qualifications include administrative and fundraising experience and a personal intellectual agenda that will be enhanced by the directorship experience. Applicants must also show a willingness to stimulate feminist research and creative activities across a wide range of disciplines and an understanding of the challenges facing the university and feminist research in this moment. Because this is an internal search, candidates must already be members of the UCLA Senate and hold the rank of associate or full.

Compensation:

The Director receives annually two course releases, one summer ninth, an $8,000 administrative stipend, an $8,000 research budget, and a .50 research assistant for CSW and the Director’s research needs.

Application Procedure and Requirements:

A Search Committee consisting of Susan Ettner, Joshua Guzman, Sarah Haley, Katherine Marino, and Cecilia Menjivar is accepting applications and nominations through Friday, May 1, 2020.

To apply, please submit your application online. Finalists will be asked to deliver a 15-20 minute vision presentation via Zoom and will also be interviewed by CSW stakeholders.

A complete application includes:

  1. A cover letter that describes the candidate’s research, administrative and leadership experience, and commitment to diversity
  2. An updated CV
  3. A sample of representative scholarship in the field of feminist studies
  4. Three names of references along with their contact information.
